Mrs. Yangganu Mandarip is a full time community-based teacher assigned by RD Foundation PNG to teach Kindergartens in Matupi Village.

She talks about how the RD Foundation's support really helps the village's education program and the children in particular as the direct beneficiaries.

Nursery Class in Siar Village - Dum Jabon's Class

This early morning I and my office assistant Barbie went to Siar Village to visit Dum Jabon's Nursery Class. That was our second visit. We missed to observe his class during our first visit since the class was dismissed earlier before we arrived but today we were there just on time while they were having reading lesson.

When we arrived there the children were reading the Alphabets but stops shortly to say 'good morning' to us. They were very delighted to have visitors in their class that some of them could not focus anymore to what teacher Dum wanted them to do. They keep giggling trying to get our attention.

There were 31 children present in Dum's class. Most of them are of 4 and 5 years of ages. They are smart children. Teacher Dum calls them one by one to come in front and as he mentions the letter the children pointed it out using a stick. The same strategy was being used in identifying different kind of shapes. Another activity, teacher Dum asked 10 children to come in front and each of them holding a stick with a number card. The number is 1 to 10. The rest of the class were just waiting for those who were in front to raise the number card for them to read it. Obviously, the children have learnt a lot.

The children were just sitting on coconut leaves mat since there is no proper classroom and no chairs and table they can use.

There is no proper classroom for these children under teacher Dum's class. The only two classrooms for pre-school children in the Village are occupied by teacher Wosmai and teacher Fiona for the Kindergartens. Not even the Elementary School has the proper classroom. Their school building was left undone without walls, no chairs and tables and the same here the children just sit on the floor using coconut leaves mats. Its like no matter what is missing like the school building and proper classroom, our volunteer teachers are determined and committed enough to conduct their classes just to educate the young children. In Dum's case, he is using the space underneath the house of one of the RD Tuna Canners employee as his classroom.

The children went outside and rendered a song for us. That was very nice of them and as innocent as they are all is just like playing with the teacher..it's really true, young children are learning while playing.

About teacher Dum. He is a retired public school teacher and responsible for starting a Nursery and Kindergarten class in the village. About 3 years ago he organized a Nursery class teaching only his grandchildren. There was no pre-school in the village and he desperately wanted his grandchildren to learn at an early age that's why he came up with this initiative. But sooner, the villager noticed his initiative and became interested as well to send their children until such time that it becomes a village matter and not just a class for his grandchildren. When RD Foundation came, the Foundation assisted him to formally organizing the Nursery and Kindergarten classes, trained and assigned additional teachers. That's why Wosmai and Fiona are also teaching in the village.

When I and Barbie left the village I brought with me a dream and a wish that one day a permanent school building will be built there for the children to have a conducive learning space, where they could sit properly and write properly. Then Dum, Fiona and Wosmai will be teaching there. A permanent school building will surely have a lasting impact to help make learning enjoyable and conducive for children.

Matupi Village Kindergarten School

Matupi Village, August 22, 2011. Matupi is a small village in Madang which is located just few kilometers away from the RD Tuna Canners plant. RD Foundation assigned community-based teachers in this village as the established public school is way too far and just too risky for the little children to walk through along the highway everyday with speedy vehicles around. This is aside from the fact that the public school do not include in their program an early childhood development program.

We assigned teacher Yangganu Mandarip in Matupi when the Village leaders requested us to assist them in running a Kindergarten School. Aside from the children from Matupi the neighboring villages also are sending their children. And due to numerous children a Nursery class was also organized where another teacher was assigned by the RD Foundation. There are 80 children attending RD suported school in this village.

On August 22, we visited the school and observed while they were having their classes. The children could read correctly and recited many ryhmes and Bible verses. We are very impressed and we can say that the teacher is doing her job very well. When teacher Yangganu was asked about the impact of the program she said that the people are very happy and thankful of the support from the RD Companies through RD Foundation as their children have learnt so many things.

Matupi Village organized its Project Management Committee (PMC) who oversee the Nursery and Kindergarten School. The committee is headed by Mr. Titaum Kob. Through the PMC they mobilized the parents to help accomplish activities and projects for the school. They built the classroom utilizing local bush materials and they intiated fund raising activities for the school. As of now, they opened an account in a local cooperative bank where they deposited their school fund.

Mr. Kob informed us about their plan to start a vegetable garden for the school. He said that the parents agreed to help in clearing the bush, planting and maintaining it. They need the vegetable for the children feeding activities and the excess they will sell it to RD Tuna Canners. RD Tuna Canners is always in need of vegetable and bought their supplies from the open market of which most of vegetables are coming from highlands. According to Mr. Titaum, they were always encouraged by Mr. Kernie Fanagel, the Program Manager of RD Foundation, to start this vegetable garden and they will push it through this time. Aside from this, they are also thinking of puting up elementary school in the future that the children need not to go far from the village.

Early this year, Matupi Village sent 3 women as training participants on the Community-based teachers conducted by RD Foundation. This is their preparation to expand their school and accomodate more children from neighboring village. They have a total of 5 women trained as community-based teachers under RD Foundation.

RD Foundation have been supporting Matupi Village by assigning 1 full-time teacher and a volunteer teaching the Nursery class, giving chairs and chalkboard, school supplies for children and sponsoring children feeding activies.

Community-Based Teacher's Training

We conducted Community-based Teacher’s Training as a support mechanism in equipping our teachers assigned in Nursery and Kindergarten schools in the Villages. As most of the community-based teachers have no professional teaching background, the training is deemed necessary for them to effectively carry their functions.

Community-based Teachers are individuals who voluntarily devoted their time teaching the children in their assigned Villages. RD Foundation through its Community Education program supported nursery and kindergarten schools in 8 Villages surrounding RD Companies. Currently, there are 506 children who are enrolled in the village schools and 17 community-based teachers are officially recognized by RD Foundation as community-based teachers under its supervision. However, in this training we have 33 participants as Teachers from the Alexishafen Primary School headed by Mr. Francis Gem as the Teacher-In-Charge particpated in the training. A teacher from Siar Primary School also join us.

The idea of coming-up with the concept of 'community-based teachers' sprung from the need to give the children an access to early childhood education. In PNG, young children have a very limited access to early childhood education. School facilites are limited and teaching force only few. The Education Department also left the responsibility to organize early childhood education to community-based organization. So, this is a development gap which RD Foundation willingly to take part with through partnering with village organizations. Organizing the 'community-based teachers' is a kind of empowerment strategy. Committed volunteers from the villages are taking care for the education of their young children and not relying solely from the outside services. RD Foundation's role is to facilitate development process through supporting villager's initiative.

As a community-based teacher one must at least Grade 10. Evidently however, in a professional level, the need to undergo training is necessary to truly understand the role of a teacher and to acquire needed skills, knowledge and attitude in carrying such responsibility.

Topics covered in this training includes Child Psychology, Lesson Plan Preparation, Teaching Aid Preparation, Teaching Strategies, Classroom Management and Spiritual Development.

A visit in Darimdau Village

Darimdau is a small village in the interior part of Danip community. From RD Tuna Cannery plant site which is in Siar, Danip is 30 minutes away by vehicle. From Danip intersection going up to Darimdau village, it is most likely a 30 minutes walk. It is just difficult to reach the village without your own vehicle as seldom in a day the public mobile vehicle go up to the village. Oftentimes villagers just walk, carrying on their head their bilum which is full of garden food and buai which they sell in the market.

Long before RD Foundation works with the village to support the Kindergarten school, the Evangelical Outreach Ministry (EOM) was already visiting the village regularly, ones in a week, to conduct Bible studies and read Bible stories for the children. They also taught children how to read and write during this visits. EOM was doing the same thing in other villages. When RD Foundation started its operation in PNG, one of the programs is on community education. Upon seeing that there are plenty of children in the villages who has no access on early childhood education, supporting Nursery and Kindergarten schools was then considered, this time making it as a full time program in the villages. When a training for community-based teachers was conducted, Darimdau sent their participants and who are now doing the teaching job in the village. RD Foundation since then assisted the village Kindergarten school by supplying school supplies, training the teachers, supplying food items for children during nutrition days and other supports that help the school to sustain.

RD Foundation staffs visited Good Samaritan Kindergarten School (GSKS) and distributed school supplies to children. Mr. Kernie Fanagel, the Program Manager of RD Foundation PNG called the children one-by-one in front and handed them a set of school materials with workbook, crayon, ruler, writing pad and pencil. Chalk, scissors and other school supplies were turned over to the teachers. Everyone smiles as they came in front. Yanganu Mandarip-a full time community teacher staff of RD Foundation and Joel, an assistant teacher at GSKS assisted Mr. Fanagel.

Children's meal is prepared regularly every month as a way of encouraging children to continuously coming to school and to serve them with good food. This is also an opportunity for parents to participate in school activities as they are the one cooking.

Mr. Fanagel is given a share-a plate of food. In most villages. the way they cook the food is to put everything in one pot and boil it with coconut milk. This is already a heavy meal but some people refers to this plate of food as refreshment. What do you think..will you get additional food after finishing this much? Laik blo yu...

Children's Assembly 2010 Hosted by RD Foundation PNG

One of the major activities we had in the month of October was the Children’s Assembly 2010. It was part of the celebration of the month of October as Children’s month here in PNG.

The activity was hosted by RD Foundation where all the children under its supported Kindergarten schools were present. Around 240 children were present and joined by their teachers, parents and community leaders. The activity was initiated to create awareness on the support provided by RD Foundation to the villages, to express RD Companies commitment through RD Foundation that it is always willing to cooperate and has been active helping villages on children's education and even livelihood projects and employment opportunities. Above all, the event is to show concern for the welfare of the children and to provide an avenue for them to meet other children from other villages under the RD Foundation’s supported schools.

Ms. Genevieve Fernando, Quality Assurance Manager of RD Tuna Canners was the Speaker giving Bible Reflection about how we should be a good parents for our children. She refered to Proverbs 22:6 that says "train up a child in a way he should go so that when he grows old, he will not depart from it". She also gave advise to the children by referring to Proverbs 22:15 that says "Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right".

The Education Advisor of Madang Province Mr. Moses Sariki was the Guest Speaker. Mr. Sariki expressed appreciation and thanks the RD Group of Companies through RD Foundation for the significant contribution in educating the young children. The Education Department leaves it to the Community-based organizations to look after the Nursery and Kindergartens and RD's support to the communities is very important.

Members of the RD Foundations Board of Trustees were also present during the activity. Mr. Sanches, the RD Foundation PNG Treasurer on his speech encouraged the parents to continuously support their children because “through education we understand each other and we can contribute to the development of our society”.

On the other hand, Mr. Celso echoed the RD’s commitment to support such program for the children by boldly saying “while we are doing business here our commitment to support this program will be forever”.
